HTC has just made the Butterfly S official and it’s a significant bump over the first Butterfly. The smartphone is powered by a 1.9GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 – the same as the one in the Samsung Galaxy S4 – and has 2GB of RAM.

It’s built around the same 5″ display boasting full HD resolution and a pixel density of 440ppi. Internal storage is 16GB, and as is usually the case, HTC has teamed up with Dropbox to provide 25GB of free cloud storage for 2 years. MicroSD card support is available, too.

At the back of the Butterfly S, there’s the same UltraPixel camera as the HTC One. It packs a 1/3″ BSI sensor size with a 2.0 micron pixel size and wide F/2.0 aperture. Since the smartphone is running Android 4.2 Jelly Bean with the latest Sense UI 5 skin on top, there’s HTC Zoe with HTC Share and Video highlights.

HTC Butterfly S official photos

Not much has changed in terms of visuals, and the Butterfly S looks more or less the same as its predecessor, safe for its thickness and different color variations – red, white, gray – and some details here and there. The most prominent of which is the metal ring surrounding the camera glass at the back.

Measuring 144.5 x 70.5 x 10.6mm, the Butterfly S weighs 160 grams and is significantly thicker than before. That’s because under the hood, there’s a 3200mAh battery, a lot bigger than the original Butterfly’s 2020mAh unit. Connectivity options are the usual for a high-end offering and include Bluetooth 4.0, Wi-Fi, DLNA, NFC, GPS.

The HTC Butterfly S is expected to debut in Taiwan for NT $22,900 (US $766) in July. The company’s plans for a wider release at this point are still unclear.

Put alongside the front assembly of the current iPhone 5, there’s barely any noticeable difference.

The screen size and the bezels are exactly the same even the positioning of the earpiece, front-facing camera and the sensors seems identical. The flex cable that feeds the display and digitizer have been redesigned, which suggests the internals of the iPhone 5S have been moved around.

Front assemblies of iPhone 5 and (allegedly) the iPhone 5S compared

There are other minor changes visible on the back of the assembly, but nothing that would suggest Apple will unveil a new design. Or this could be the cheaper iPhone that the rumor mill has been buzzing with. Or it could be fake, of course.

FanaticPhone, the site that posted these images is promising a video comparison of the iPhone 5 and iPhone 5S front assemblies.

Right after releasing the much teased Huawei Ascend P6 comes the target of the company to ship around 10 million this year. That’s according to Huawei Device CEO Yu Chengdong, who’s very proud of the smartphone’s design and the work that went into making it.

Apparently the flagship will be priced around €450 in Europe and CNY2,688 (around €327) in China. That’s a very competitive price going, when compared to the likes of the HTC One, Samsung Galaxy S4 and the Apple iPhone 5.

According to some sources over a thousand Huawei Research and Development engineers worked on the Ascend P6.

Huawei apparently has allocated $11 million for the marketing of the super slim smartphone in China and some $30 million more for promoting it in Europe. That’s still a fraction of Samsung’s and Apple’s marketing spending marketing expenditure, but you have to remember we are only talking one smartphone here.

The Ascend P6 certainly looks good on paper and its beautiful , but we’ll have to wait and see if the 720p display will be enough to bump heads with those 1080p ones out there and if the smartphone will be able to truly make an impact.

Today Huawei finally is holding a press event in London where it promised to show the Ascend P6 officially.

Well, the event is still half an hour away but Huawei has just made the Ascend P6 official via a press release. It might have been a mistake by someone in the PR department as the page has been taken down since, but the info is already out.

The key selling point of the Huawei Ascend P6 is its extremely slim profile – just 6.18mm. According to the company that’s enough to guarantee it the world’s slimmest smartphone title. The Ascend P6 is also quite light at 120 grams.

The rest of the Ascend P6 features include an 8MP primary camera (BSI, F2.0) with 1080p video recording, a 5MP front snapper for video chats and self-portraits, 8GB expandable internal storage, and a 2000 mAh battery.

The connectivity department of the Huawei Ascend P6 may lack LTE support, but has covered most other bases. The Ascend P6 comes with dual-SIM with dual stand-by support by default. Naturally HSPA, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and FM radio are supported.

Huawei Ascend P6 runs on Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean with Huawei’s Emotion UI on top of it. You’ll get a chance to see the Emotion UI in action later today as part of our upcoming Huawei Ascend Mate review.

Huawei Ascend P6 will hit the shelves in China this month, while Western Europe will be getting it in July through a bunch of carriers and retailers. The partners already confirmed include Vodafone, Telefonica, Orange, H3G, O2, Carphone Warehouse, TalkTalk, Media Markt, Saturn, TIM as well as online retailers Amazon and CDiscount.

Other markets should follow soon after the Western Europe premiere.

Huawei are making sure they’re taken seriously as a phone maker. They’re actually well past the newcomer stage and, with a market the size of China behind them, Huawei’s appetite will only be growing bigger to compete with the establishment.

Huawei didn’t start with a bang, there was – inevitably – a stage of coping and imitation, but we found some of their phones to be quite good – reasonably priced alternatives of existing devices by major manufacturers, and not without some nice custom touches either.

Huawei Ascend Mate official pictures

While the Chinese have proved to be fast learners in smartphones, the Ascend Mate is perhaps a throwback to their early days of mixing and matching. The Mate is the Chinese take on the Samsung Galaxy Notes – low-cost but quite up to date in terms of equipment, for a midrange phablet that is.

And by the way, they might just be doing things right. Samsung’s Mega 6.3 is probably in equal measures an attempt to make the Note experience available to the masses and a response to genuinely affordable, and seemingly quite competitive, products like the Huawei Ascend Mate.

Key features

Quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE; penta-band 3G with HSPA

6.1″ 16M-color 720p IPS+ LCD capacitive touchscreen with Gorilla Glass, Magic Touch, usable with gloves

Android OS v4.1.2 Jelly Bean with Emotion UI

Quad-core 1.5 GHz Cortex-A9, 16-core GPU; Huawei K3V2 chipset

2GB of RAM

8 MP autofocus camera with LED flash, 1080p video recording @ 30fps, continuous autofocus and stereo sound

1 MP front-facing camera, 720p video recording

Dual-band Wi-Fi a/b/g/n, Wi-Fi Direct and DLNA

GPS with A-GPS

8GB of built-in storage

microSD card slot, side-mounted, hot-swap

microUSB port with USB host and MHL 2.0

Bluetooth v4.0

FM radio

Standard 3.5 mm audio jack

Accelerometer and proximity sensor

Active noise cancellation with dedicated mic

Plenty of juice in the ample 4050 mAh battery

Main disadvantages

Big, even for a phablet

No homescreen auto-rotation

Non user-replaceable battery

No NFC

Outdated CPU architecture

So, this is Huawei’s first foray into phablets but the Chinese have a handful of smartphones and tablets under their belt which, at least on paper, are no worse than the competition’s flagships. A crossover was only a matter of time obviously.

Samsung’s success with the Note, followed by LG and their Optimus G Pro, swung the door wide open for the smaller brands to start exploring the phablet form factor too.

The Huawei Ascend Mate is a prominent figure in this trend and its 6.1″ screen sees it squeezed between two serious rivals, the Samsung Mega pair. It’s worth noting though, that Huawei were well ahead of Samsung in announcing their device.

Like most of the latest generation of Huawei devices, the Ascend Mate is powered by the company’s home-brewed K3V2 chip. That’s probably not top-of-the-line technology, but four Cortex-A9 CPU cores clocked at 1.5GHz and a 16-core GPU, is the same combo powering their current 1080p-screen flagship, Ascend D2. It should be more than capable to keep Android running glitch-free at 720p resolution.

The Huawei Ascend Mate has got some special software treatment too. The gadget is running Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean, but it’s been seriously redesigned with Huawei’s own Emotion UI for a clean and simple user interface that omits an app drawer and keeps the widgets.

Alex Pareene at Salon has a remarkable article up today about the Washington R*dsk*ns hiring Frank Luntz to try to convince people that the obnoxious racial slur that is the team’s name should not be recognized for what it is. The article makes an excellent case for bothering to consult history before rendering judgments about these sorts of things, because if you look at history, it becomes indisputable that the team was given this name because it was a vile racist slur, and for no other reason.

This Washington football team was named by one of the most vehement racists in the history of American professional sports. When George Marshall bought the team in 1932, they were called the Boston Braves. He changed the name — to a slur, because he was a racist — and moved them to Washington. He made “Dixie” one of the team’s fight songs and refused to hire black players well into the 1960s. The NFL integrated in 1946 but Marshall’s team held out until the federal government actually forced them to field black players in 1963. The all-white Washington teams of the 1950s and 1960s were among the worst in the league, but segregation was more important to Marshall than winning football games. The NFL had actually already been racially integrated until black players were suddenly banned in 1933. Interviews with owners suggest that Marshall was responsible for the ban.

This is the man who named the team and white supremacy and racism obviously informed his every decision. In his will he insisted that his foundation not spend any money on “any purpose which supports or employs the principle of racial integration in any form.” It is extremely hard to believe that this man selected the name — specially changed the name from a less offensive term for American Indians to this term — to “honor” anyone, the usual argument used by the team’s modern defenders.

Not that the facts will cause anyone to adjust their support for this team name, but it should. I find the entire excuse-making enterprise for racist team names to be exhausting in its stupidity, from the claim that obviously offensive names aren’t (since white racists get to decide what is and isn’t offensive, apparently) to whining that it would be too much of a hassle to change the name, despite the fact that teams routinely not only change their name but also their branding and even their hometown all the time. If anything, a name change could freshen up a tired old brand and bring some new fans in, and I doubt that they’d really lose any old fans, except maybe a couple of diehards for whom the whole point is being racist. And of course, invariably—and I bet in comments below!—I will get the men who clearly believe that women’s opinions on sports will forever and ever be invalid. That sort of thinking is also used to deflect male criticism, by implying that man making it is somehow not manly enough to get it. This is all deflection from the real issue, which is that in the year 2013, there is a major sports team with an insanely offensive racial slur that is the Native American version of the n-word for a name. Everything else is just noise.

A changelog in a file hosted on Nokia’s servers indicates that the terms “quad_core”, “adreno_330″, “qualcomm_snapdragon_s4_msm8274″ and “qualcomm_snapdragon_s4_msm8974″ were added recently.

The MSM8274 is a Snapdragon 800 chipset with four Krait 400 cores at up to 2.3GHz and Adreno 330 GPU. The MSM8974 also adds support for LTE-Advanced, CDMA, and the Chinese TD-SCDMA.

The screen resolution on that mid-range phone was 720p.

Unfortunately, there’s no mention of screen resolution in the document anywhere, but Adreno 330 would be a waste on anything less than 1080p. By the way, the Snapdragon 800 chipset will also be put in a new, faster Galaxy S4, so this unannounced Nokia device will be on par with the fastest of the Android world and Windows Phone 8 might finally catch up in the specs race.

The Samsung Galaxy S4 zoom has been put up for pre-order by German online retailer Cyberport.de for €499. This will most likely translate to roughly the same amount in USD for the US market, as typically mobile products heading overseas will enjoy a lower relative pricetag.

The Samsung Galaxy S4 zoom takes an unorthodox approach to cameraphones, by adding a proper digicam to the back of a smartphone. The device offers a dual-core 1.5 GHz processor with 8GB of internal storage, 1.5 GB of RAM and a 4.3-inch display of 540 x 960 pixels, all running on Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean.

The headliner is, of course, the 16 MP camera with 10x optical zoom, OIS, and F/3.1-F/6.3 lens. At this price, the combination of dedicated camera and smartphone will likely find support in a niche market of users looking to save on both price and the number of devices they’ll be carrying around.

Thanks , Vlad, for the tip!

We’re still waiting for the first Tizen device – it will launch in August or September according to Samsung VP. In the meantime we get leaks that paint a picture of what the device will be like – a smartphone with 720p screen and an Exynos 4 chipset.

TechTastic looked through the Tizen repository for stuff committed by Samsung and there seems to be support for only two chipsets – the Exynos 4212 and Exynos 4412. The first is a revamped version of what went into the Galaxy S II (under the alias s5pc2xx) and the second is the Galaxy S III chipset.

The chipsets pack two and four Cortex-A9 cores respectively (at 1.4-1.6GHz clockspeed) and a Mali-400 GPU.

This means the Samsung I8805 Redwood, which is the first Tizen to launch according to rumors, won’t match Android flagships like the Galaxy S4 in terms of raw power (actual performance is another story, of course). It’s the higher-end of the two Tizens that have leaked so far – Redwod and the I8800 Melius.
